Before Your Eyes
Your soul is being judged, so you have to scroll through your whole life to find the great things you did that could get you into the game's version of the Good Place. And all you have to do to do all that is look around and blink.
Papers, Please iOS
Papers, Please was first released for iPad in 2017, bringing its unique style of fast-paced border guarding bureaucracy to tablets. This month is the first time you can play it on a phone, though.
Kingdom Rush Vengeance TD+
This is the rebalanced version of Legend Of Kingdom Rush: Vengeance for Apple Arcade. It was first released in 2018 as a free-to-play game.
Pirate Pigs vs. Ninja Ducks
Temple Run may have been the best example of an endless runner a decade ago, but Ninja Ducks Vs. Pirate Pigs wants to show that the genre isn't completely dead.
Warhammer 40,000: Tacticus
Tacticus gives you a series of turn-based battles on a hex-based battlefield. You take charge of an Ultramarine and his slowly growing group of randomly assigned grimdark friends.
Railbound iOS
In each puzzle in Railbound, you have to place sections of track so that numbered train cars arrive behind a locomotive in numerical order. You have to do this while avoiding Mario-style warp tunnels, barriers and points that are activated by switches, and sections of track that you can't move.
Dexter Stardust: Adventures In Outer Space
In this light-hearted space opera, Dexter and his long-suffering assistant go on a point-and-click sci-fi adventure to get rid of the robots that have taken over the solar system.
Netflix Poinpy iOS
Poinpy is like an upside-down version of Downwell, and it was made by the same person. You jump up an endless vertical tube, pull down, and let go to launch your tiny avatar into the air. As you climb, you have to stay away from enemies and pick up pieces of fruit that are hanging in the air.
Love You To Bits+ iOS
Love You to Bits+ is a puzzle adventure game that looks and feels a lot like Samorost. It is also very darkly funny. In it, you'll be putting back together your robot girlfriend, whose body parts are hidden in each level. She was broken apart in a bad accident.
Roach Race
Cyberpunk 2077 is a great retro-futuristic role-playing game that has been fixed up since its disastrous release. Along with bug fixes and more missions, the most recent update added a new arcade cabinet called "Roach Race" that can be played inside the game.
Tallowmere 2: Curse Of The Kittens
It's been in early access on PC for a couple of years, and now Tallowmere 2's strange mix of 2D roguelike dungeon-crawling and cat rescue is coming to mobile.
Star Trek: Lower Decks Mobile
This game is based on the funny cartoon parody of Star Trek: The Next Generation. It's an idle game with an episodic story about how Badgey, a crazy holodeck AI, makes life hard for the younger members of Starfleet.
Device 6 (for iPhone) Review
Year Walk, the Editors' Choice winner from Simogo, came out last year. It was a game that didn't fit the idea of casual gaming, but it made full use of the mobile platform. Simogo's latest game, Device 6 ($3.99 on the App Store), uses text to take the player on a strange journey through story and choice. Even though most of Device 6 is text, it is not a true "text adventure." It's more like an enhanced digital novel, with moving images (not video) and audio sprinkled throughout the text.
Clash Royale (for iPhone) Review
Clash of Clans is a big deal in the world of mobile games. It's a free game that brings in more money than most AAA blockbusters. In fact, it brings in enough money to make elaborate Super Bowl ads. And it's the kind of runaway success that makes a lot of people want to copy it, which is bad for games critics like me who like to try a lot of different things. I'll admit that I can see why that game's mix of building a city and a little bit of strategy would be popular, but I never found it very fun. So I didn't have high hopes for Supercell's Clash Royale, the game that would replace Clash of Clans. Clash Royale seems like it was made to be a popular iPhone game, with all the expected but still annoying free-to-play problems that comes with it. I was surprised to find that Clash Royale's unique mix of modern strategy game ideas is also really fun.
Among Us (for iOS) Review
The multiplayer party game Among Us came out in 2018, but it really took off in 2020. No one thought that the social distance caused by the pandemic would make us all desperate for new ways to interact virtually with friends, even if that meant lying to them on spaceships. Among Us is more than just the right game for the right time; it's also a very fun online and offline multiplayer game. It is an Editors' Choice-winning iPhone game for people who don't mind being tricked.
