How to Share Your Location via Satellite With Find My
While the function is designed to assist you in a real emergency, Apple's satellites also make it possible for you to share your whereabouts via Find My anytime you are off the grid. Apple introduced its Satellite Emergency SOS via satellite service in the US and Canada in November 2022.
All iPhone 14 models, including the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max, may now link directly to a satellite after Apple's unveiling of the Emergency SOS satellite function. This is made possible by a mix of specially made parts and integrated software.
As a result, users of the iPhone 14 may communicate with emergency services when away from cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity. You may use Find My to broadcast your position with friends and family through satellite even if you're in the wilderness and don't actually have an emergency to reassure them.
There are a few things you should be aware of before using the methods listed below to use the new Find My function. As of this writing, the iPhone 14's satellite feature is only offered in the US and Canada; but, starting in December 2022, it will also be offered in France, Germany, Ireland, and the UK. Remember that in order for the functionality to function, you must not have Wi-Fi or cellular service.
Additionally, iOS 16.1 is required for Emergency SOS through satellite and Find My via satellite, so open Settings and navigate to General -> Software Update to make sure your smartphone is up to current.
Lastly, a new iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, or iPhone 14 Pro Max comes with a complimentary two-year subscription to the satellite service. Apple's satellite features are anticipated to change to a paid-for service once two years have passed.
