iPhone 14: How to Demo or Use the Emergency SOS via Satellite Service

For iPhone 14 owners in the US and Canada, Apple has officially introduced its Emergency SOS via satellite service. France, Germany, Ireland, and the UK will get the capability in December 2022.
All four of the iPhone 14 models are compatible with the capability, which enables users to text emergency services even when they are beyond the area of cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity. Apple claims that while it was intended for use in wide areas with a clear view of the sky, performance may be affected by the presence of adjacent trees or buildings.
When you don't have cellular service and your iPhone 14 has the SOS sign showing in the top corner, follow these steps to utilize the feature:
- Get the phone app going.
- Make an emergency service call (911 in the US, for example).
- Tap the green Emergency Text via Satellite button that displays if the call is unsuccessful.
- To communicate your emergency, adhere to the onscreen instructions.
The SOS by Satellite capability only allows you to send brief text messages; phone calls are not permitted. As soon as you're connected, the iPhone will actually front-load critical questions to assess your status and relay that information to emergency responders.
The text message will be delivered immediately if you're in a location where emergency services can receive it; otherwise, it will be forwarded to a relay center with Apple-trained professionals who can make an emergency call on your behalf. The iPhone will show you where to aim your iPhone to connect to the closest satellite since using satellite capabilities requires your iPhone to connect to a satellite in the sky.
Apple has incorporated a demo mode that enables you to sample the feature and its interface without actually calling emergency services in order to assist you understand how it functions before any true emergency.
Simply carry out the instructions listed below to see for yourself. The features won't appear on your smartphone unless iOS 16.1 or later is installed.
- The Settings app will open on your iPhone 14 first.
- Tap Emergency SOS as you scroll down.
- Click Try Demo next to "Emergency SOS Via Satellite."

According to Apple, Emergency SOS via Satellite will be free for the first two years, which raises the possibility that the company may eventually decide to charge for the service.
