How to Disable HomePod Mini Handoff
When you bring your iPhone close to a HomePod mini while listening to music on it, the Handoff feature will be turned on. This article tells you about Handoff and how to turn it off.
Apple's U1 Ultra Wideband chip is in the HomePod mini and the iPhone 11 and later models. This makes it easier for the devices to find and keep track of each other. The U1 chip also makes it possible for more advanced Handoff features. This makes it much easier to move audio from an iPhone to a HomePod that is already playing.
If you are listening to a song on your iPhone and bring it close to a HomePod mini, you will see, hear, and feel signs that Handoff is working. As the iPhone gets closer to where the HomePod mini is, it starts a soft haptic touch rhythm that gets faster and faster as the iPhone keeps getting closer. At some point, the interface for transferring songs comes up, and the song moves from the iPhone to the mini.
With these visual and tactile cues, transferring a song is faster and more reliable. But what if you don't like the Handoff feature? Maybe you have the HomePod mini sitting on your desk, where the haptic cues keep you from working. You can turn off Handoff, so that when your devices are close to each other, they won't talk to each other. The steps below show you how to do it.
- On your iPhone, launch the Settings app.
- Tap General.
- Tap AirPlay & Handoff.
- Toggle off the switch next to Transfer to HomePod.
That's the end of the story. When you play music on your iPhone near your HomePod mini, you will no longer feel vibrations. Keep in mind that your iPhone will no longer show playback controls that you can access without unlocking it. This means you'll also lose this way to manually control what's playing on the HomePod mini.
